Book Summary

Meet Celaena Sardothien.

Beautiful. Deadly. Destined for greatness.

In a land without magic, where the king rules with an iron hand, Celaena, an assassin, is summoned to the castle. She comes not to kill the king, but to win her freedom. If she defeats twenty-three killers, thieves, and warriors in a competition, she is released from prison to serve as the king’s champion.

The Crown Prince will provoke her. The Captain of the Guard will protect her. But something evil dwells in the castle of glass—and it’s there to kill. When her competitors start dying one by one, Celaena’s fight for freedom becomes a fight for survival, and a desperate quest to root out the evil before it destroys her world.(Summary from Goodreads)

“We each survive in our own way.”

Review/Thoughts

I really enjoyed this book. The plot was intriguing and the characters are well developed. I really like the world this is set in and the world building is easy to understand. I connected with Celaena and Chaol’s characters right away and I can’t wait to learn more about them. It starts off pretty slow, but the pacing gets much better towards the end.

I wasn’t crazy about the way some of it was written. It felt pretty juvenile and a few spots were a bit cringy, but overall it was a solid book! I’m excited to read the rest of the series.

“You could be great. You could rattle the stars. You could do anything if only you dared.”

Since I’m buddy reading this series with my husband, and had him write down some of his thoughts:

This is a very easy to follow along fantasy book. The world building is great and easy to understand. It’s a slow build up to a lot of action at the end. The whole time it keeps you guessing on what’s gonna happen, although sometimes it’s easy to guess what’s around the corner. The character introduction and development is amazing. You really get to know the characters very well and you begin to have a connection with them.

Overall this book is great and would consider it a great introduction to the fantasy realm. Am excited to continue with the storyline.

”I will not be afraid. For a year, those words had meant the difference between breaking and bending; they had kept her from shattering in the darkness of the mines.”
