Book Summary

Everyone Celaena Sardothien loves has been taken from her. But she’s at last returned to the empire—for vengeance, to rescue her once-glorious kingdom, and to confront the shadows of her past…

She has embraced her identity as Aelin Galathynius, Queen of Terrasen. But before she can reclaim her throne, she must fight.

She will fight for her cousin, a warrior prepared to die for her. She will fight for her friend, a young man trapped in an unspeakable prison. And she will fight for her people, enslaved to a brutal king and awaiting their lost queen’s triumphant return.

The fourth volume in the New York Times bestselling series continues Celaena’s epic journey and builds to a passionate, agonizing crescendo that might just shatter her world.

(Summary from Goodreads)

“Hello, princeling”
“Hello, witchling”

“But would you bleed red, or black?”
“I’ll bleed whatever color you tell me to.”

I really enjoyed this book. This book is one of my new comfort books.

I appreciate all the relationships building we get. I enjoyed getting to know more about Lysandra and Aedion, and getting some new characters like Nesryn and Elide. I also love that we got Aelin’s full and unapologetic personality in this book. But, the Dorian chapters were absolutely heartbreaking.

I enjoyed the tension between Rowan and Aelin and getting to watch their relationship really develop. It was fun to have a bit of romance in this book.

I honestly struggled with Manon’s plot line in Heir of Fire, but I absolutely loved her in this books. I always found myself looking forward to her chapters

Lastly, one of my favorite things about this book was getting to see more of Arobynn Hamel and the Assassin’s Keep. I loved getting to see Aelin finally get closure surrounding that part of her life. I’m really glad I read The Assassin’s Blade as book #4 and got Aelin’s background with Arobyn right before reading this book.

“Let’s go rattle the stars.”

Since I’m buddy reading this series with my husband, and had him write down some of his thoughts:

5/5 ⭐️

👑👑👑👑👑

This is where things start to become crazy. Aelin leaves Wendlyn and comes back to Rifthold with her new found power and a new mission at hand. This where we really get to see things unfold.

We get to begin learning more about the fae and the cadre from Doranelle. All of Aelins secret plans begin to come to light and unfold to show how strong her power really is and the mental war she is confronting in her head. She really begins to show why she is the Queen. Some of the strength of the Valg soldiers beings to show and we get to see some of the strange things that the demons are creating and becoming.

Overall this book was amazing. After all of the character introductions and world building and this book being after the assassins blade this one is by far one of my favorite books in the series. All the clues and puzzles and everything starts to come together.

“You make me want to live, Rowan. Not survive; not exist. Live.”
