Book Summary
Of course I want to be like them. They’re beautiful as blades forged in some divine fire. They will live forever.
And Cardan is even more beautiful than the rest. I hate him more than all the others. I hate him so much that sometimes when I look at him, I can hardly breathe.
Jude was seven when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King.
To win a place at the Court, she must defy him–and face the consequences.
As Jude becomes more deeply embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, she discovers her own capacity for trickery and bloodshed. But as betrayal threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.
“I thought I was supposed to be good and follow the rules. But I am done with being weak. I am done with being good. I think I am going to be something else.”
Jude Duarte (The Cruel Prince)
Review/Thoughts:
As much as I wanted to love this book from for beginning, I found myself struggling to stay invested for the first 3/4 of the book.
Although the world building was beautifully done, I felt like this book lacked character depth and relationship development. The book felt very monotone and I really didn’t feel connected in the plot or the characters.
I also didn’t really enjoy the pacing, it was super slow and nothing interesting happened until the last few chapters. That said – I liked the ending. That’s really what encouraged me to keep going with the series.
The online book community really sells this book as a romance, and that’s not at all what this book is at all. There was barely any romance and was heavily political. So if you aren’t into that sort of thing, this book probably won’t be for you.
“I can be charming. I charmed you, didn’t I?” He rolls his eyes. “Do not expect others to share my depraved tastes.”
Cardan Greenbriar (The Cruel Prince)
